Dr. Katharine Smart

Understanding Autism, Together

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a form of neurodiversity, and every child with Autism has their own mix of strengths and challenges. I understand the uncertainty that can come with seeking a diagnosis for your child.

My mission is to provide thorough and compassionate diagnostic services, helping families navigate this journey with confidence and support.

I am dedicated to offering family-centered care, recognizing the critical role that families play in the developmental and emotional well-being of their children.

"Your child's well-being is my top priority, and I am committed to working closely with you to help you navigate your concerns around Autism and your child."

Comprehensive Autism Diagnostic Services

Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R)

A structured interview conducted with parents or caregivers to gather in-depth information about the child’s early development, communication, social interactions, and behaviour.

Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)

A standardized assessment that involves observing the child’s communication, social interaction, and play or imaginative use of materials.

Pediatric Assessment

A detailed evaluation of your child's medical history and a physical examination to rule out any underlying medical conditions that may affect development and behaviour.

Full Diagnostic Report

Based on the assessments, Dr. Smart will provide a comprehensive diagnostic report outlining key findings, a diagnosis (if applicable), and recommendations for support. This report meets B.C. requirements for an ASD diagnosis, and includes the necessary forms to access ministry funding.

Dr. Smart offers low-wait, expert private Autism assessments for children ages 2 to 18 across British Columbia.

Many parents choose private assessments for faster answers, earlier intervention, and quicker access to support. A diagnosis can unlock school-based services through BC’s Ministry of Education, as well as community funding from the Ministry of Children and Family Development—up to $6,000 per year for children aged 2–18. Families may also become eligible for the Canadian Disability Tax Credit and the Registered Disability Savings Plan.
